Grilled Italian Sausage Sandwich

Ingredients

  • Hot sausage

  • Sweet sausage

  • Mozzarella

  • Romano cheese

  • Parmesan cheese

  • Butter (2 sticks)

  • Bread (Italian or ciabatta)

  • Onion

  • Rosemary (1 tsp.)

  • Thyme (1 tsp.)

  • Oregano (1 tsp.)

  • Basil (1 tsp.)

  • Garlic (1 – 2 cloves – diced)

  • Sea salt

  • Freshly ground black pepper

  • Peppers (Red, orange, yellow and green) (8 total)

  • Vito & Joe’s Extra Virgin Olive Oil (¼ cup)

How to Prepare

  1. Slice the peppers into thin layers and place them in a large bowl.

  2. Cut up the onion into slices and add the slices to the bowl of peppers

  3. Add a ¼ cup of Vito & Joe’s Extra Virgin Olive oil, a teaspoon of salt, and fresh ground pepper to the bowl of peppers and onion. Mix. Make the peppers and onions are coated.

  4. Grill the peppers and onions until they are seared/ blackened.

  5. Begin to heat up a cast-iron pan that will serve as a Dutch oven.

  6. Add some olive oil to the cast-iron pan and cover the bottom with it.

  7. Once the peppers and onions have blackened, add them to the cast-iron pan with the olive oil. Cover.

  8. In a separate pan, add the butter, a half cup of Vito & Joe’s Extra Virgin Olive Oil, oregano, thyme, basil, rosemary, garlic and some fresh ground black pepper.

  9. On a low heat, heat up the butter and herb mix.

  10. Take the bread and slice it “sub style (slice in half, but not all the way to the other side).”

  11. Cut your sausage to match the length of your bread so it can fit nicely inside.

  12. Take the sausages and create little notches on the top of them (one side only). This allows for some steam to escape and lets you know when your sausage is fully cooked on the inside.

  13. Preheat the oven to a broil heat at 400 degrees.

  14. In a pan, heat up about a quarter cup of Vito & Joe’s Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

  15. Turn the heat down on the peppers and onions and take the cover off slightly so some steam can escape.

  16. Lightly stir the herb butter.

  17. Take some sausage links and put them in the heated pan with the oil. Cover the sausage with a splatter screen.

  18. Cook the sausage on one side for 4 - 5 minutes. Then flip and cook on the other side for 4 -5 minutes.

  19. When the slices on the sausage start to split open more, you will able to tell if the sausage is fully cooked. The expanding notch marks will be an indicator the sausage is about done cooking – meat will start expanding out of the notches.

  20. While the sausage is cooking, take you bread and spread some of the heated herb butter over the inside of the bread.

  21. Toast the bread until it is perfectly browned and crispy.

  22. In a mixing bowl, mix some mozzarella, parmesan and Romano cheese together.

  23. Once the sausage and herb buttered bread are done toasting and cooking, remove them from the heat.

  24. Place a sausage link inside one of the slices of bread once it has cooled a littler and add some of the peppers and onions on top. Repeat until you have reached the desired number of sandwiches you are making.

  25. Place the completely constructed sandwiches in a pan.

  26. Drizzle the remaining herbs and garlic over the top of the sandwiches. Try to avoid using too much of the liquidy butter.

  27. Pack a handful of the cheese mixture on the top of the sandwich.

  28. Place the sandwiches in the oven for about 2 to 3 minutes just enough for the cheese to melt.

  29. Drizzle any remaining cheese and herbs at the bottom of the pan on top. Enjoy!
